School Site Council Minutes

September 13, 2012

  1. Call to Order: Ken called the meeting to order at 5:24 PM.
  2. Welcome/Elections to SSC: Two new parent members were unanimously voted in: Ana Guerrero and Lisa Sandoval.
  3. Approval of Minutes from April: Ken Woods motioned to approve. Kristen Prestridge seconded the motion. Minutes were approved unanimously.
  4. Committee Reports
    1. ELAC/Migrant: First meeting of the year, 9/13. New MEST counselor, Elvira Cuevas, replaced Richard Sanchez who retired.
    2. Soaring Report: A new coordinator, Adrienne Smith, has been hired to replace Kathy Mitani, who moved to an elementary site.
    3. Student Report: The Leadership Class bought a new mascot costume. They are working on the yearbook and setting goals. The class has been working on team-building to build a strong foundation. Leadership is planning these upcoming events: Back to School Dance on September 21 from 3-5 PM.; Back to School Night Barbeque on October 4 at 4:30; Christmas Tree Fundraiser.
    4. Parent Alliance Report: The August meeting was well-attended. There’s a focus on networking for upcoming fundraisers, especially the Monte, which is the biggest for our school. The Alliance is electing new people to take on leadership roles by co-chairing a committee, or shadowing a leader. The purpose is to train new parents so that they will be able to step up as families move on to high school.
    5. Principals’ Report: Ken reviewed staff changes for the 2012-2013 year. The 2012 Registration Fairs went well, but attendance was low and staff was negatively impacted on the first day when so many families showed up to register at the last minute. The “pre-registration” model is gaining in popularity with the other middle schools in our district. Pajaro Middle had their first pre-registration event this year. Ken reported a smooth opening to the school year. We still have a large class, 7th grade, with about 50 more students. Leticia asked about the QEIA funding. Ken clarified that academic class size is set at 25 students, even for 7th grade. Our preliminary AYP indicates a 4-6 point increase from last year, from 722-728. But, we won’t know for sure until the report is published. Ken distributed information about Measure L and let parents know of the opportunity to make phone calls in support of the measure on September 24 from 5-8 PM, if they are interested. Finally, Ken announced Back to School Night on October 4 from 5:30-7:00.

  1. Modify Dress Code: After seeking input from the 2011-2012 School Site Council, Ken decided to get more input from the school community about adopting a new dress code policy (see table below). Based on this input from a total of 974 people with a total of 86% in favor, Ken made a motion to approve the new dress policy. Kristen Prestridge seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously.
